Kahete village in Mathioya is ranked among the poverty stricken villages owing to lack of roads and piped water exposing the residents to untold sufferings.
Over the years, the residents have been ferrying dead bodies and the sick with gunny bags to the Muiri ini along the Gitugi/Murang’a road to access decent means of transport.
The pathetic state of the village was exposed in April after a landslide struck Kiganjo village in Gitugi ward killing six people who were buried alive among the three children. The rescue mission during the tragedy was hampered by lack of access roads to the ill fated homes.
On Friday, there were celebrations after Kahete-Muiri in i road upgraded at Sh6 million was commissioned by area MP Dr Edwin Mugo.

Mugo said the constituency through a emergency fund through KeRRA has received Sh62 million which will be channeled to rehabilitate a series of roads to improve transportation of goods.
“ We have a challenge on roads but through the support from KeRRA alot will be achieved,” said Mugo.
Joseph Maina and Francis Wanjohi said opening of the road will help the locals sell their farm produce in the local markets after years of being a closed community.
Maina regretted that the former leaders had ignored the plight of the villagers as they had remained landlocked and unable to sell their farm produce, among them milk.
“ It has been a challenge as we carried the sick shoulder high and the dead bodies in sacks as the only means of transport,” said Maina.
Grace Waithera said the expectant mothers deliver along the road as motor vehicles can’t access the village.
“ It is a shame in the 21st century expectant mothers delivering along the road after the former leadership failed to allocate resources to open the Kahete rural access road,” she said.
