Kenyans celebrated World TB day with the Health Cabinet Secretary Ms Susan Nakhumincha saying major strides have been made to fight the spread of the infection.
The CS joined by Murang’a Governor Irungu Kang’ata stated that there was dire need to eradicate the TB, as the government was using modern screening technology.
She said for the eradication of the disease to be achieved, Kenya has invested in strengthening laboratories, and contact tracing.
During the celebrations to mark the day at Kimorori grounds at Kenol, the CS hailed the support the government has received from the partners calling for more investment to fight the disease.
Nakhumincha commended Kang’ata for being among the governors working to improve the health of their people, lauding the Kang’ata Care and Inua Mkulima initiatives.
Global Fund, she said, was a leading partner in health related matters adding that there was a need for more collaboration towards preventive care.
“TB is the 4th leading cause of death in Kenya and in 2023, 1.3 million people globally lost their lives, ”She said.
In Kenya, by 2020, 22,700 people lost their lives following the TB infection, she said, calling for the residents to embrace screen and early treatment.
Kang’ata on his part said Murang’a residents have been educated on the preventive measures, as the Murang’a Youth Service used in cleaning the markets.
The Governor and the CS later inspected Kenneth Matiba Level Five Hospital under construction.
