Coffee farmers bag Sh1.3 billion from the sale of their produce at the auction

Coffee auction activities increased this week at the Nairobi Coffee Exchange (NCE) following the delivery of 30,162 bags of the commodity for the market.

The sale generated Sh1,312,710,189.28 ($8,991,165.68), as Kirinyaga Slopes, Alliance Berries Limited, and NKPCU deliveries dominated the auction platform.

Ndaro ini factory in Mathira, Nyeri affiliated with Alliance Berries Limited registered an impressive sale of a total of Sh3,278,430 after its 45 bags of grade AA fetched each Sh 72,854( $499)per 50 kilogrammes bags of the commodity sold by Alliance Berries Limited.
Alliace Berries Limited delivered the highest volume of 8,433bags of coffee.

Last week, farmers Gichatha ini coffee factory in Mathira, Nyeri garnered Sh 3,654,020 after selling 42 bags of grade AA and registered as the best paid in the auction.

Yesterday, NCE acting CEO Ms Risper Ndung’u said in the sale eight marketing agents participated and emerged as the first to attain more than 30,000 bags of the commodity for trading.

“ The number of bags presented for auction is gradually on the rise an indication that the market is impressive and hope in the future we are to hit the 40,000 bags mark,” said Ndung’u.

NCE report indicates that Alliance delivered 4,187 bags that garnered Sh193.4million ( $1,325,139.39), NKPCU 4,198 bags, Sh169.7 million($1,162,778.88), Kirinyaga Slopes 8,397 bags for Sh433 million( $2,966,076.38).

Coffee trading export Mr Henry Kinyua said the best factories in the sale includes: Ndaro-ini, Kangocho, Mutheka, and Gathaithi from Nyeri County.

He adds that in Kirinyaga county, the best are Kii, Karimikui, Mugaya, Kiangoi affiliated to Rung’eto Farmers’ Cooperative Society and Kaguyu from Inoi Farmers’ Cooperative Society.

“ The sale reflected 68% of the volumes traded, which included grades AA and AB,” said Kinyua.

Murang’a-based Gataigua Cooperative Society participated in the auction after having withheld its coffee since August last year awaiting a better market price for its produce. In the grading category, the agents delivered 7,156 bags of AA, AB13,473 bags, and 4,370 bags of grade C.

Other agents that delivered the commodity in the auction market are Kiambu, KCCE, Kinya, Kipkelion, and Murang’a County Coffee.

In the sale, 1,182 coffee cooperatives and estates participated, out of the 24 buyers, the best six are Ibero Kenya, which traded 5,521 bags, C Dormans 5,521 bags, and Taylor Winch 4,428 bags.

Others are Kenyacoff 4,695 bags, Louis Dreyfus, 2,403 bags and Sasini 1,994 bags.

Last week, farmers made Sh969,876,058 from the sale of 22,360 bags.
