Persons who have been masquerading as lawyers in Nanyuki town have been arrested as their accomplices fled.

In the operation coordinated by members of the law society of Kenya based in Laikipia County, 10 quack lawyers were arrested by police in their offices and others while they were in meeting with their clients.

Jane Wamuyu  from Tigithi village was in the morning thrown to a rude shock after her lawyer failed to turn up at a hotel to deliberate on issues related to land succession.

“ It was a shock  to me as the individual I have engaged  for the legal service was among the 10 suspects the police arrested  for impersonation,” said Wamuyu.

The operation was  conducted by the Directorate of Criminal investigations  after it established the individuals were exploiting  the public when seeking legal services.

Laikipia County Criminal Investigation Officer (CCIO) Mr Onesmus Towett  said they effected arrest following myriad  complaints  from the locals.

“We got a complaint from the public and LSK disowned  the individuals who have been practising as lawyers in Nanyuki,” said Towett.

The suspects, he said were being interrogated  to assist in the investigations before t0ey are arraigned in court.

Laikipia Chapter LSK chairman Joseph Mwangi said the  operation was effected  to rid of the rogues.

“There are serious problems with quacks and many members of the public have been swindled their money  particularly on land transactions,” said Mwangi.

The rogues have been interested in land transactions, particularly land succession.

“ Bogus land agreements are rampant in Nanyuki town and the quacks have been behind grabbing property through forged documents,” he added.

The suspects draw sale agreements, transfers and prepare court documents on issues of succession cases among others.
