Celebrations rocked Gatunyu grounds
in Gatanga after hundreds of farmers received millions of shillings from the
subsidy kitty initiated by Governor Irungu Kang’ata.

The farmers in the mangoes and dairy sectors
received the kitty following the Minimum Guaranteed Returns policy promised by  Kang’ata during the campaigns.

The dairy farmers were paid  Sh3.50 per litre of milk delivered through
the cooperative societies. At the same time, their counterparts in the mango sector got the
same amount for the produce they sold to Kevian and
Sun Mango companies contracted by the
government.

Kang’ata said in the dairy sector 16,504
farmers got the subsidy and another 2,750 mango farmers.

“I am here to honour my pledge to the farmers that there will be a  subsidy to support their activities, ending the culture of distributing farm yard
manure and sweet potato veins,” said Kang’ata.

Kenya Revenue Authority(KRA) Chairman Antony Mwaura
and a resident of Kandara were among the
19,000 dairy farmers who got the subsidy.

The best dairy farmers were Francis Karanja, Njuguna Gachuru, Fredrick Njuguna and Samuel Muti who took home more than the heavy subsidy for the deliveries in January and February.

Cabinet Secretaries Moses Kuria (Trade)
and Prof. Ndung’u ( Treasury)  attended
the function and lauded the initiative by the Murang’a county government.

Kuria said the initiative would support the
government transformation agenda through the bottom-up approach.

“ This is the best way to create wealth for the Murang’a people instead of inciting
them to demonstrate in the streets,” said the Trade CS.

Ndungu said the initiative by Kang’ata
is one of the most transformative agriculture revival strategies that would greatly transform the economic
fortunes of Murang’a.

It is encouraging that a sizeable number of farmers
met the requisite conditions of the
subsidy programme. Am confident that other crops will be considered to
benefit from the programme eying to venture in the value addition programmes,” said the
CS.

Present were MPs Betty Maina, Mary Wamaua, Edward Muriu Senator Veronica Maina, Speaker Johnson Mukuha and MCAs.
