More than 450 crates of counterfeit liquor have been impounded
in Murang’a county in the last one week leading to revocation of licenses to
some of the outlets.
In the crackdown
coordinated by County Commissioner Karuku Ngumo and Police Commander Ali Nuno is
focused on the brands that have flooded the market with dubious KRA and Kebs
stickers.
Last week, police
swang in action intercepting counterfeit
brews , with a team led by Murang’a East Sub county Police Commander Mary
Wakuu raided a private residence in
Kabirwa turned into a brewery.
In the residence, the police found tens of crates awaiting distribution in the market with the owner
arrested and locked at Kabirwa police station.
A sack of bottle tops was also found among other chemicals
believed are used in the preparation of the liquor.
In Gatanga, a truck with 135 crates of Taifa brand was
intercepted by police and detained at Kirwara police station pending further
investigation.
Nuno said the security agencies were combing the
villages in the nine sub counties looking for the source of the contrabands
that have penetrated the market.
“” We are pleased that our teams have arrested key persons behind
the manufacture of counterfeit liquor in Kabati and in Kabirwa,” said Nuno.
Earlier, at Muthithi PCEA grounds, calls on the
governments to tame alcoholism featured prominently with residents
blaming the MCAs for failing to formulate laws.
In a meeting, presided by Ahadi Kenya Executive Director
Stanley Kamau who hosted Mrs Tessie Musalia, the leadership called
for action to tame the
alcoholism to save the youth.

Kenya region to shun culture of allowing
their folk in the villages to have access to contrands.
Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua last month ordered a crackdown
of the substandard liquor in Mt Kenya region where he castigated the
county governments over licensing of more bars than hotels in shopping centres.
