Former Principal Secretary Irungu Nyakera (in the picture below) has been rated among the people who have made an impact in the year.

Nyakera in the past two years has fought  for the voiceless tea growers  as he forced the government to back his  efforts to salvage them from the control of Kenya Tea Development Agency (KTDA).

Unknown to many, the youthful Nyakera teamed up with leaders from Murang’a county and reached others in Mt Kenya region and formed a formidable team to wrestle the giant tea agency.

” I was brought up in tea growing areas and I have known the suffering our people go through and vowed that one day I will be their saviour,” said Nyakera.
Agriculture Cabinet Secretary  Peter Munya has been in control of the proposed regulations which awaits be assented by President Uhuru Kenyatta after endorsement by the National Assembly and The Senate.
Munya  toured the tea growing belt educating the farmers on the need to implement the regulations  to ensure they get value for their produce.
In the regulations, the Agriculture Food Authority (AFA) led by Director General  Antony Muriithi has been charged with responsibility to implement them  to the latter.
In the fight he teamed up with Chege Kirundi of Kiru Tea Factory who has been at ward with the agency as he rooted to change in the way of doing things.
In the last three years, Kirundi and KTDA have been engaged in war that ended up in court after there was an attempt to throw him out of the chairmanship at Kiru factory.
Presently, Kiru factory has two parallel board of directors one led by Kirundi and another by KTDA backed Stephen Githiga.
Interestingly, despite the war on the control of the  tea processing factory  Kiru has remained the best in the production of the quality green leaf.
