Tea farmers meetings at their factories to deliberate on affairs of
their business have been postponed.
Kenya Tea Development Agency (KTDA) in communication has alerted
farmers new dates for their AGMs will be communicated, citing unavoidable
circumstances.
The cancellation of the meetings followed a court order by a Mombasa high court that stopped Directors
elections that were slated for Tuesday this week.
The directors were notified
that the much-awaited AGMs that were to commence November 9, have been rescheduled.
A tea farmer and supporter
of the introduction of tea regulations, Mr Samuel Njunu of Gatanga, Murang’a said it
has been a tough journey to bring the agency on the table.
There are timelines when the meeting on financial statements
“All the
avenues used to exploit the growers are sealed. The farmers have accepted the implementation
of regulations by Agriculture Cabinet Secretary Peter Munya,” said Njunu.
Chairman of tea farmers lobby group Irungu Nyakera has said the
cancellation of the AGM is a far fetch idea by the agency to allow the board of
management led by Peter Kanyago to remain in office.
“ The agency has done a lot of disservice to the tea growers
leading to a lack of transparency in its service delivery system,” said Nyakera.
