Municipality of Murang’a has got additional responsibilities from
the County Government.
Governor Mwangi wa Iria has transferred 23 functions to the municipality
in addition to releasing technical staff
to handle the task.
In the latest, Kenya Gazette Notice ordered the County Public
Service Board Chaired by Ms Catherine Kamau to transfer or second the technical
staff to the Municipal Board to perform the duties.
Among the functions transferred from the county government are
refuse collection, solid waste management, enforcement of the municipal
by-laws, construction of roads in the town and those leading to the estates.
The Board will
be responsible for the collection of levies, taxes, and maintenance of
parking bays and control of the management of hawking activities in the town.
Mercy Nyambura Maina, a trader welcomed the transfer of functions to the
board, saying the critical issue will be on how to handle and
control the hawkers who have flooded the town.
She explained that refuse collection has been a major challenge, as the
county government had failed to handle
it despite contracting a private company
“ There is a need
to arrest the situation as refuse and hawking
have been a major problem,” she said.
The governor ordered County Finance and Planning Executive Mr David Waweru
to make arrangements and channel resources
for the transferred functions.
The Board chaired by Benson Githinji Mwangi in collaboration with the World Bank-funded through Kenya
Urban Support Programme (KUSP) has implemented several development projects in
the past one year.
