World Engineering Day was celebrated in a style as the professionals planted thousands of trees around Maragua Dam in Murang’a county, with calls they embrace mentoring the young.

The members allied to the Institute of Engineers of Kenya (IEK) said there was need for the elderly to mentor the others in the career as there were hundreds of graduates yet to start off in their careers due to lack of mentorship.

Led by the Central Kenya IEK chairperson Eng Hannah Njeri, it was observed that many graduates take too long to start off their careers due to lack of mentorship.

During the tree planting venture organized by Murang’a Water (Muwasco) she observed that there were 9,000 members ready to start the mentorship programme targeting the young designed to integrate them into the profession.

“Young engineers are also able to procure jobs and internships, and arbitration in case they face professional litigation,” said Njeri.

The IEK, she added, has a welfare programme for the members while those interested to work outside the country, are connected.

Muwasco’s Managing Director Eng Daniel Ng’ang’a said many of the water service providers are partners with IEK.

“ It is the high time we mentor the young graduating from the local universities through mentoring programmes.

Three weeks after President William Ruto ordered the Maragua dam to be handed over to Muwasco ended a four-year battle with Murang’a South Water and Sanitation Company (Muswasco) over its control. www.themountainjournal.co.ke
