The Ikumbi
tea factory in Murang’a last year made Sh342 million following effective management and governance
employed by the directors.
The disclosure of the profit was made by
the board of directors during the annual
general meeting with Z9one 11 board
member James Githinji calling on the growers to increase production of green
leaf.
“
Your factory is among the best in the region and last year after they took over
the management there was a lot of progress made in matters concerning reducing
cost of production,” said Githinji.
“In the last financial year that ended on June
30, Ikumbi tea factory processed 19,867,839 kilogrammes of green
leaf, up by a million kilogrammes of the
previous year,” said Githinji.

Factory
leadership led by Onesmus Kabuna and his Vice Chairman Gerald Ngumba pleaded
with members to give them time to improve the status of the tea processing
plant.
They
said the factory last year made a profit of Sh342 million an indication the
sector was improving as they castigated the former directors who were
intimidating them working on a return to work.
“Last
year we managed to pay the farmers Sh1,219,036,318 up from the previous year of
2021 of Sh876,517,881 following increased collection of green leaf from the tea
buying centres,” said Ngumba.

On review of the management contract, Githinji said
they were looking at reduction of expenses for the interest of the growers.
Githinji
said the focus of the review is on reducing agency fee to 1.5 percent from 2.5
percent of the sale of tea among other
expenses.
