Ikumbi factory registers progress as farmers calls on former directors to remain calm

The Ikumbi
tea factory in Murang’a last year made Sh342 million  following effective management and governance
employed by the directors.

 The disclosure of the profit was made by
the  board of directors during the annual
general meeting  with Z9one 11 board
member James Githinji calling on the growers to increase production of green
leaf.


Your factory is among the best in the region and last year after they took over
the management there was a lot of progress made in matters concerning reducing
cost of production,” said Githinji.

 “In the last financial year that ended on June
30, Ikumbi tea factory processed 19,867,839 kilogrammes of green
leaf, up by a million kilogrammes of the
previous year,” said Githinji.

Factory
leadership led by Onesmus Kabuna and his Vice Chairman Gerald Ngumba pleaded
with members to give them time to improve the status of the tea processing
plant.

They
said the factory last year made a profit of Sh342 million an indication the
sector was improving as they castigated the former directors who were
intimidating them working on a return to work.

“Last
year we managed to pay the farmers Sh1,219,036,318 up from the previous year of
2021 of Sh876,517,881 following increased collection of green leaf from the tea
buying centres,” said Ngumba.

 On review of the management contract,  Githinji said 
they were looking at reduction of expenses  for the interest of the growers.

Githinji
said the focus of the review is on reducing agency fee to 1.5 percent from 2.5
percent of the sale of tea  among other
expenses.

Farmers led by Wangari Mwangi warned the former directors against sabotaging development and instead they should wait  for election.” At Ikumbi tea factory in a span of an year we have witnessed major transformation  and expect more in the coming years,” said Wangari
