Celebrations over impressive coffee payment

 There is celebration in coffee growing localities following the impressive rates posted by the cooperative societies.

The payment rates reflect an increase compared to the previous.

In counties of Murang’a, Kirinyaga and Embu, the farmers celebrated following the impressive payment rates that had been declared by their management committees.  

 In Mt Kenya region which has declared the rates, cooperative societies  affiliated to the Alliance Berries limited, Kirinyaga Slopes and New KPCU have declared their rates.

In Embu, Gicherori factory affiliated to Kibugi cooperative society, and aligned to the Alliance Berries has  registered the best payment of Sh147.40 per kilogramme of cherry, followed by the Nyeri based  Gachatha of Sh145.

In Kirinyaga county, Rung’eto society, Kii factory Sh142.35,Karimikui Sh 141.13, Kiangoi Sh140.51,

Baragwi cooperative, Musagara factory achieved a payment of Sh 143.80.Marumi coffee society in Kigumo Sh113.25, Iringuini factory payment Sh115.25

 Kabare society chairman Cryus Njogu said Mukure factory  achieved a payment of  Sh 142.25 followed by Kiang’ombe  with Sh 141.05. 

He said the 10 coffee factories registered an impressive price as compared to those of the last year. 

“ As the management of Kabare society were delighted after produce marketed at the Nairobi Coffee Auction by Alliance Berries Limited fetched impressive returns,” said Mr Njogu.

 Wanjengi factory affiliated to Kahuhia society achieved Sh 141.55.

Gatagua society in Kahuru, Murang’a was the first in February to declare its payment of Sh120 per kilogramme.

 Hiram Mwaniki, the chairman at Thanga ini cooperative society said the seven factories posted impressive payment.

“ Next year we hope the payment in the main crop will be better,” said Mwaniki.

Peter Gikonyo, a coffee farmer in Gaturi says the records indicate that between October and March of the coffee  year  2024/2025  375,843 bags of coffee were auctioned at  Nairobi Coffee Exchange (NCE).

“The produce was auctioned at Sh19.3 billion at an average of Sh42,885, and I hope the price will increase in the second quarter,” said Gikonyo.

At the same time,a coffee value chain expert Henry Kinyua says  as the main season comes to an end  in Murang’a county 58,210 bags have been auctioned fetching Sh3,193,781,447 with the farmers paid at an average of Sh140  per kilogramme.

“ In Kirinyaga county, the farmers sold  86,164 bags that were auctioned at  Sh4,836,054,604, with a kilogramme sold at an average of Sh,141 per kg” said Kinyua..
