EACC  investigates current and former governors, with 822 employees under probe

EACC has disclosed it was investigating five present and 11 former governors in relation to allegations of the embezzlement of public funds, conflict of interest, and money laundering.

The investigations also focus on the county chief’s possession of unexplained wealth offenses under the anti corruption and economic crimes.

In a press briefing,  the commission stated that in the past eight months compiled 89 high profile cases, which have been submitted to the ODPP, with recommendations to prosecute the culprits.

“ In the 82 cases, four files involve current and former governors, two former cabinet secretaries, a principal secretary. Others are CEOs and Managing Directors of various state corporations,”  said the Commission Secretary Abdi  Mohammud.

In efforts to address irregular recruitment, manipulation of payroll and payment of  irregular allowances, embezzlement of mortgage and car loan funds at the counties.

“The commission is actively pursuing cases worth approximately Sh 1.6 billion, involving 822 county government officials,” said Mr Abdi.

In the year, the commission has recovered 12 properties that had been corruptly acquired worth Sh 600 million, and Sh105 million in cash.

He added that the commission acknowledged the Kenyans’ frustrations with an assurance that the commission will upscale both its preventive and enforcement mandates geared towards combating corruption in the country.
