The 97th edition of the Kenya Music Festival (KMF) has kicked off with electrifying performances and unforgettable moments—none more striking than those from Adventist Hill School, whose musical prowess has earned them national recognition and a coveted ticket to the prestigious Gala Concert.

The school secured top positions in three key items , with Leila Naanyu setting the tone for victory by clinching a trophy in Solo Singing (Class 107, Position 1)—a moment that captured the spirit of determination and talent radiating from the team.

The national festival, running from August 3–16, is being hosted across three major institutions in Meru County: Meru School, Kaaga Girls High School, and Meru Teachers Training College. This year’s theme, “Enhancing the Creative Economy through Artistic Expression for Sustainable Development,” underscores the festival’s broader vision of culture-driven growth and empowerment.

“We praise God—the learners performed exceptionally well,” said School Principal Gichuki Wanyaga.
“Out of the four main items presented, we took top honors in:

  • Solo Singing (Class 107) – Position 1
  • 1103J – Position 1 with trophy
  • 1106J – Position 1
  • 1105J – Position 3
Even our French poem ranked an impressive Position 6.”

The school’s stellar performance secured them a spot in the Gala Concert—an elite showcase of the festival’s finest acts—scheduled for August 11–12. The State Concert will follow on August 13, marking the high point of this year’s national celebration of talent.

A Legacy of Creativity and Impact
Managed by the Ministry of Education, the Kenya Music Festival is the largest creative arts festival in East and Central Africa, with over 3 million learners participating nationwide each year. Since its inception in 1948, the festival has grown to feature over 600 competitive categories, including music, dance, drama, and elocution.

The competition follows a structured progression—from Zonal Level in May to Sub-County, County, Regional, and finally, the National Level in August. Key preparatory events, such as the Writers’ Workshop and Adjudicators’ Workshop, ensure creative consistency and thematic alignment across all levels.

Beyond the Stage: A Movement of Transformation
Beyond rankings and trophies, the Kenya Music Festival is a powerful engine for national unity, character development, and societal engagement. Through the performing arts, young people are empowered to express ideas, promote values, and challenge societal issues in meaningful ways.

“In a generation increasingly drawn to screens and digital media, this festival reminds us of the enduring power of voice, rhythm, and soul,” remarked one official.
“Even the birds on Mt. Kenya seem to be rehearsing—echoing melodies from the valleys below.”

From snow-capped peaks to forested slopes, the music of Kenya’s youth now echoes across the land. Where once cold winds swept the hills, warm harmonies now rise—melting July’s chill with every verse, every rhythm, every voice.

The mountain is alive—with music.
