Tea factories fetch Sh1.2 billion more than the previous week

Smallholder tea factories earned the farmers Sh 1,224,011,360 following the auction of 5,884,670kgs.

Report from the Mombasa tea auction reflects that the last week’s performance was higher compared to the previous sales of Sh1,137,972,780 following the  sale of  5,418,918 kgs.

In the weekly market, the factories that auctioned their tea at the best prices  earning  Gathuthi Sh 15,519,052 , Kimunye Sh29,913,192  , Mununga Sh,18,995,256, Kiegoi Sh22,603,204, ,Imenti Sh30,947,860, Rukuriri Sh 27,072,150,  Kathangariri Sh 11,589,188, Gacharage Sh 15,285,320 among others.

The report from the Tea Brokers East Africa Limited (TBEAL) reflects that at the auction factories that auctioned the highest volume  were Kobel 157,868kgs, Singanyi 204,284kgs, Kapkatet 142,724kgs, Ngere 149,732kgs, Toror 137,366kgs, and  Michimikuru 130,344kgs.

KTDA Zone six Board Member Enos Njeru said although the prices are declining, tea factories in Embu county have continued posting better prices appealing to the growers.

In the auction held on May 26 and May 27, that attracted 50 local and international buyers.

“The farmers are encouraged to pluck quality tea  to attract the buyers,” he said.

 Mungania  and Chebango are the two factories in Kenya that have entered into a pact with leading Chinese Benny Tea Industries  after a delegation met KTDA Holding and Tea Board of Kenya (TBK) last month.

At the market, the five eastern african countries auctioned 10,217,293kgs, where Kenya tea producers managed 8,483,127 kgs, Uganda 920,720kgs, Tanzania 121,640kgs and Burundi 72,176 kgs.

The report reflects that in the past five months, 202,419,806 kgs of tea have been auctioned.

KTDA Holding Chairman Chege Kirundi said the buyers are interested with Kenya tea owing to quality and aroma.

“ Our agriculture teams are on the ground advising farmers on the ways to produce quality produce eying the market,” said Kirundi.
