KTDA factories fetch Sh1.2 billion in the tea auction 45

The Mombasa Tea Auction in the latest auction managed to auction 3,484,906 kgs sourced  from KTDA managed tea factories, with the buyers paying Sh1,263,763,108. According to details obtained from  Mombasa Tea Auction  factories in the East of Rift sold 2,312,215 kgs that earned  Sh955.3 million, while those in the west of Rift managed Sh 308.4 million  in exchange of 1,172,691 kgs.

Ndima tea factory led with the auction of 88,696 kgs,for Sh36.6 million

  The factories that presented the highest volumes are Mununga 87,408 kgs  for Sh40.1 million, Kathangariri 83,732 kgs Sh34.4 million.

Kinoro  tea factory earned Sh34.5 million  for 83,484 kgs, Mungania Sh 32.9 million for 81,292 kgs, Kagwe ot Sh 32.4 million  for 77,988kgs.

Others are Kanyenya ini farmers minted Sh27.3 million in exchange  for 73,256 Kgs, Ngere earned Sh30.2 million for  72,152 kgs, Rukuriri tea factory got Sh28.2 million  for 65,366 kgs,Gacharage Sh27.6 million  for 65,640 kgs among others.

 Boito factory and Kapsara presented the lowest volume at the market 2,500 kgs and 4,470 kgs respectively. 

The sale was conducted between November 4 and November 5.

 In the auction, produce from Kenya sold 8,728,974 kgs  from the KTDA run factories and independent run factories. 

In the auction 58 tea buyers participated with Global Tea and Commodities led with 21,233 packages followed by LAB International 12,160 packages.

KTDA Holding Chairman Enos Njeru said there is competition among the tea factories in the production of the quality tea.

“ We are advocating on the production of the quality produced through the tea value chain eying to sustain  the local and international market,” said Njeru.

 Njeru adds that the Momul factory  in the west of the rift presented 71,224 kgs at the auction earning Sh22 million.

Momul factory Njeru said, has been leading in the west of the rift region owing to production of quality green leaf.

 Ngere Factory Chairman James Githinji said the farmers are under stern instruction  to ensure they pluck quality green leaf.

Githinji said  the directors  move around their electoral areas encouraging the farmers  to adopt the best tea farming best practises.

“ Ngere has been producing the best tea that attracts  the local and foreign buyers,” said Githinji.

 Tea Value Chain Expert Peter Karomo said in the sale 20 factories earned less than Sh10 million.

“ There is a need for the farmers west of the rift to improve the quality of their green leaf to earn more returns in the coming sales,” said Karomo.

Poor earners in sale 45  were ,Boito Sh 322,500,Kapsara Sh922,668,Sang’anyi Sh1.8 million,Kapset Sh2.7 million and Mogogosiek Sh3.2 million
