Democratic Party (DP) has joined Kenyans in the opposition to the Senator Samson Chelagei on extension of elected leaders’ limit from five years to seven.
The DP has joined the ODM party in the opposition pleading with Kenyans to rally against the proposal.
DP’s Secretary General Dr Jacob Hajji declared strong opposition to the proposal on grounds that the move was unconstitutional.
In a press statement, he said Kenyans should reject the proposal in total.
“ We notify the public that the party does not support the motion by Senator Chelagai for the constitutional amendment to extend the term for the office of the president, parliament and MCA from five to seven,” said Hajji.
He added that since 1963, no leader has ever suggested the increase of the leader term in office, as proposed by the senator who is a member of the Kenya Kwanza Government.
“ This is the high time that Kenyans should be discussing the hard economic issues facing the country. Kenya is faced with health care and education challenges that need to be addressed instead of targeting to extend leaders term in office,” said Hajji.
ODM has also declared opposition through its Executive Director Oduor Ong’wen watering down the proposal.
