Nine roads within Murang’a Municipality will be upgraded to give the town a new lease of life after decades of potholes and dust.

In the venture to be undertaken by the Kenya Rural Roads Authority (KURA) a billion  shillings will  facilitate the upgrading of the road connecting the town with the estates.

Launching the tarmacking of Kandundu – Quarry road,  Kiharu MP Ndindi Nyoro said the multi million shillings programme will also facilitate Majoyce-Mjini and Kabuta-Mitundu- Mahua ini, Gaitega- Gituri, MTN- Vidhu Ramji among other roads that pass through the growing estates, within the municipality.

Kandundu Quarry road will cost Sh56.9 million with the residents calling on the contractor on fair employment opportunities  for the locals.

Ndindi underscored the project saying it would boost the status of Murang’a town and boost businesses and attract investors.

“For many years, Murang’a town has lagged behind in terms of development due to poor infrastructure,” said the MP.

He regretted the stalled Kabwe road within the Municipality after a resident moved to court over a land dispute.

At the same time, he said in the budget making process,  the assembly allocated Sh150 billion towards initiatives  for growing crops that will reduce importation of the edible oil.

“ Out of the Sh4.18 trillion national budget, we have allocated money to the agriculture and education sectors. We are set to promote sunflower growing, an initiative to stop importation of the edible oils,” said Ndindi who chairs the budget and appropriation  Committee.

A Director at KURA Abdul Rashid explained that the project would provide employment for hundreds of local people and help increase trading opportunities for contractors to give priority to locals when employing their workers.

“This is a big project which will transform the status of Murang’a town. We urge the locals not to think of objecting to the works through court suits. We want the roads to be done at the given period of town.

“A year ago  Kabwe road stalled after some residents blocked the construction by a court injunction. If you feel you are affected, seek help from KURA and local leadership but not to stop the works,” appealed Rashid.

Present was Murang’a Town MCA Charles Karina among the local administrators.
