The government projects to establish a smart city within the controversial Delmonte Land that will accommodate 5,000 housing units among other social amenities.
Other development programmes designed for the ambitious Smart City included a business hub, learning centres, a shopping mall and a recreational centre among others.
This was divulged during an executive meeting in Murang’a chaired by County Commissioner Patrick Mukuria, where Affordable Housing Director Albert Muchiri said the city will be established on a 100 acres piece of land donated by the county government.
Muchiri said the business venture will exite the residents as they sought trading opportunities that will be accessible at low costs.
“Murang’a county will have a package that will ensure the living standards of the locals is uplifted through establishment of the local markets for their farm produce, and better schools for their children,’ said Muchiri.
In the affordable housing programme in Murang’a, the first 220 units at Makenji area, Kandara are scheduled to be completed in December this year.
“ The government has designed to construct 200 housing units in each of the seven constituencies that must be completed in the first term of President William Ruto,” said Muchiri.
Maragua Constituency, has secured 4 acres of land where the 460 housing units will be done in Mitumbiri area.
Kiharu is earmarked for 106 housing units on 1.6 acres of land under the Ministry of Housing, and Kangema set for 120 units on two acres of land.
Murang’a County Commissioner Patrick Mukuria pleaded with the locals to support the construction of houses and markets, which also involves construction of modern markets within the county.
“Modern markets are being constructed at Kangari, Muthithi, Kanyenyaini among other trading centres all designed towards improving the livelihoods of the local residents,” said Mr Mukuria.
During the meeting, Murang’a County Director of housing Ms Laureen Wasungu asked the local construction experts to take advantage of the building of the houses, and supply the material required.
“The artisans should register with the department of small and micro enterprises to get an opportunity to supply the materials in the construction sites,” said Wasungu.
