The celebrated Murichu Murika and Nyanjigi irrigation projects ready

Years ago, Murang’a was listed among the food insecure areas in the country despite having more than 16 major rivers cutting across it.
As the locals were food insecure, water for both domestic and irrigation purposes remained a major challenge to the locals with some forced to sink bore homes for their tenants in the shopping centres.
In the past four years, the scenario has changed after the national government allocated in excess of Sh10 billion for intervention programmes after the locals said they should be accorded the first priority before their water was transported to Nairobi through Ndaka ini dam.
Water and Irrigation Principal Secretary Joseph Wairagu wa Maii said there are 150 projects that are operations with many targets to be completed between March and July this year.
President Uhuru Kenyatta, Wairagu eying for Murang’a governorship, ordered intervention measures after he held a meeting with Murang’a leaders whose main priority was water.
He spoke when he toured various parts of the county inspecting and launching some of the completed projects saying the irrigation will support the region to be food secure.
The projects are facilitated by Athi Water Works Development Agency and National Irrigation Authority (NIA).
“Majority of water projects initiated by the government to compensate Murang’a County for the billion cubic metres of water transported to Nairobi through Ndaka ini dam will be completed as scheduled,” said the PS.
The PS was accompanied by Athi CEO Eng Mwangi Thuita and his NIA’s counterpart Gitonga Mugambi.
