More than 6,200 teachers in Murang’a have failed to turn up for vaccination against Covid 19.
Governor Mwangi wa Iria said only 3,800 teachers have been vaccinated against the disease adding that they were in the high risk category yet they have defied.
Speaking when he distributed bursary cheques to more than 2,000 students under County Nyota Zetu programme, Iria expressed displeasure over the defiance by the teachers for ignoring the vaccination, yet they are listed in the category of the high risk.
“Murang’a received 25,000 vaccinations but the number of teachers who turned up remains low thus exposing themselves to the disease,” said the Governor.
The teachers being opinion leaders, he said interact with hundreds of people in the villages, and they could endanger themselves if they fail to take the vaccination.
At the same time, Iria asked the government to allow private companies and including commercial banks, to vaccinate their employees.
He said the companies should lead the way to ensure safety of their employees, as the government vaccinates the citizens.
“The government should bring the vaccines which have been approved by the World Health Organisation (WHO) to help reduce the rate of infection. We should also stop some of the development programmes to allocate more resources on the importation of the vaccines,” said the governor.
On the bursary, the governor recounted the challenges the counties are going through due to lack of remittance of resources from The National Treasury leading to seeking of loans for payment of salaries and facilitation of essential services.
“On the bursary programme for the 2,000 students, Murang’a County Government was forced to get loans from banks to support education of the needy learners,” said the governor.
Another 1,000 students will be selected to join the Nyota Zetu Programme after they excelled in their KCPE 2020.
