Transport along Murang’a Kiria ini road has been disrupted
after hundreds of residents protested against diversion provided by a
constructor.
Tens of residents spend Tuesday night between Mahua ini and
Mugeka following the impassable diversion.

Today, Public Service Vehicles operators staged a
demonstration citing the diversion provided was impassable and narrow to allow
vehicles from both directions to pass.
Others were forced to use the longer Gakonya- Mukurwe ini and Murang’a
Gitugi routes to reach their destinations,
to avoid the Murang’a- Kiria ini road.

Led
by Peter Kamau, the protestors said the diversion was 10 kilometers long, and
the motorists faced it rough to use the section.
“We
support the construction of the Murang’a Kiria ini road that had been pathetic
for years, exposing them to challenges,” said Kamau.
The road, he said, is used by residents
heading to parts of Nyeri county.
Contractor representative Thomas Njogu Mwaniki regretted the disruption of the economic
activities along the section, saying they are working on the remaining 3.5
kilometers to connect Murang’a and Mugeka.

“We have resolved to create a diversion lane at the edge of
the road, and my plea is to the motorists not to tamper with the construction of
the section,” said Mr Mwaniki.

The road is among several funded by Kenya Rural Roads
Authority (Kerra) in parts of Mt Kenya
