Government Sh1.3 billion project to increase waste water treatment for Nairobi.

Ruai, Nairobi: The Government has embarked on
expansion of the existing waste water treatment plant in Ruai, Nairobi at a
cost of Sh 1.3 billion.


The project consists
of construction of additional seven ponds to treat an additional 20 million
litres of water per day.

 The increased ponds follows additional
population in Nairobi  and its environs,
the works  involve  construction of a 13km masonry boundary wall
round the 4,250 acres to secure Dandora Estate Wastewater Treatment plant.

 The interventions which are being implemented
by Athi Water Works Development Agency will increase the treatment capacity
from 160 million litres per day to 180 million litres per day. 


 

Speaking during an
inspection of ongoing expansion works at the Dandora Waste Water Treatment
Plant, Water and Sanitation CS Sicily Kariuki said that the population in
Nairobi has ballooned over the last few years.

 The government, she said, has been
implementing a sewerage network in Nairobi city and satellite towns to meet the
needs of the residents.

 She added that the sanitation interventions have
led to increased access and household connections and this has resulted in
increased wastewater to the existing treatment plants.

“ These interventions
are geared towards reducing pollution, improving the quality of water and
ensuring restoration of the Nairobi city rivers for the benefit of communities
downstream.” She said.


 In  the projection, the increased treatment
capacity will serve over 250,000 residents with improved sanitation services
within Nairobi city.

She added that the treatment
plant will now handle an increased inflow leading to increased access, reduced
pollution and restoration of Nairobi Rivers.

The CS added that the
Government in collaboration with the French Development Agency and the African
Development Bank will invest Sh 20 Billion towards expansion of towards
expansion, rehabilitation and modernization of water and sanitation
infrastructure in Nairobi to improve service to 600,000 residents in Nairobi
increase sanitation coverage for NaIrobi from 48% to 60% between 2021 and 2024.
