A magistrate’s court in Meru has allowed police 14 days to detain a suspect who is linked to the gruesome murder of a granny seven years ago.
This will enable police complete investigations in a case in which an 85-year old Juliah Ntheeeru Kaburu was allegedly killed by the suspect Samuel Gathogo Miano.
The suspect reportedly entered the house of the woman and killed her before making away with Sh5, 000 and a mobile phone.
The accused, who was a house boy at the deceased’s home at the time of the incident, was arrested on Monday after being on the run for seven years since allegedly committing the heinous crime on December 4, 2013.
“After initiating fresh investigations into the gruesome murder of Julia Ntheeru Kabura aged 85, that occurred 7 years ago at Igembe, Meru County, our homicide detectives have finally arrested suspected killer.
During the fresh probe that included incorporating modern technology in site analysis and DNA sampling, it was established that the deceased was murdered by her house boy namely Samuel Gathogo Miano, “DCI boss George Kinoti said after the arrest of the suspect.
He was arrested at Gathehu area, Mathira East in Nyeri County at around 2.57pm and escorted to Meru police station.
In a written affidavit investigating Officer attached to DCI Homicide, Nairobi Inspector Peter Kamau sought custodial orders of fourteen days to complete probe into the murder.
The suspect is reported to have committed the crime with a colleague Syombua Mary Rael who was charged in 2016 for allegedly killing her employer, before he escaped.
The detectives applied to have the suspect detained to have them take samples of the blood of the deceased be taken to a government chemist for analysis and match the DNA.
The court was further told the detective intends to take the suspect to a health facility for a psychiatric examination to determine his fitness to stand trial.
Mr Kamau who is leading the probe further disclosed that they intend to recover more exhibits in Nairobi, Kitui, Meru and Nyeri counties.
Meru Senior Principal Magistrate Thomas Muranguri ordered that the suspect be detained at Maua police station until September 16 when the matter will be mentioned to confirm the status of the investigation.
The Homicide team took over the case from DCI Igembe South on August 17, 2020 following the directive from Mr Kinoti and has been trailing the suspect since.
