Murang’a
Governor Mwangi wa Iria met the Senate Committee on Public
Accounts and investment and managed to convince the members on the spending of
millions of shillings into the mitigating to stop the spread of Covid 19.

The
governor appeared in the virtual meeting following the Monday incident where
the executive members were disconnected from the meeting.

At the start of the meeting, Iria demanded to
be furnished with reasons that led his executives to be thrown out of the
meetings yet they had answers to the questions forwarded by the committee.

In the proceeding, the meeting chaired by
Senator Ledama Olekina asked the county government to furnish them with details
on the isolation beds and return of the unutilized Sh33 million to the Consolidated
Revenue Fund.

While
Senator Beth Mugo lauded the projects initiated in Murang’a to support the
devolved functions.

The Governor on his part challenged the senate
to push The National Treasury to release funding to the counties to help deal with
the Covid 19 pandemic.

“ The
counties are suffering in the fight against the pandemic, as they last received
the disbursement in January,” said Iria.

He further told the senators that his
administration to address the shortage of oxygen in health facilities will
extend the plant to increase production to 50 cylinders in a day from 10
cylinders.

“ Presently we
spend between 10 and 25 cylinders in a day and due to the pandemic, we are
forced to source the extra from outside.  The excess oxygen from the plant will be
shared with the neighbours,” said the Governor who was accompanied by his
health Executive Joseph Mbai.
