Public private engagement led to protection of the state forests from rogue merchants

Kenya Forest Service is working towards working with partnership to promote eco tourism through creation of recreational facilities in state forests.
Already, the ground is set by the agency towards establishing the facilities that will help the government earn revenue in Cengalo, Cherondo, Gatare Wanjerere, Ichichi, Kessup and Kobujoi, where the forest camps will be established.
In an advertisement, Chief Conservator Mr Julius Wambugu Kamau, the government forests where the projects have been proposed , as interested investors are invited to apply.
The identification of the site with historical background followed involvement of the neighbouring community in the protection of the forests from the illegal loggers.
The sites in Murang’a namely, Ichichi, Wanjerere and Gatare which are deeply attached to the history of the Mau Mau uprising, as the veterans dug caves where they hid from the white soldiers and their corroborators.
According to the advertisement, the agency is keen to establish the corporate social responsibility or community related needs the proposed venture will meet and what the development will specifically do to help protect the forest environment and support conservation efforts.
The KFS has a fully fledged department that deals with engagement with communities around the forests dealing with wills of the neighbours in efforts to promote conservation.
The investors interested have until October 6 to submit their application, with shortlisted applications invited to a forum by the KFS.
