In the Presidential contest set for 2022 general election Governor Mwangi wa Iria remains a popular presidential candidate in Mt Kenya region.
In a poll survey, the second term governor can beat the Deputy President William Ruto in three counties in the Mt Kenya region where he has camped in the past four years. It is in this region that the elders are scheming to endorse one of the candidates, as the governor has been meeting the voters face to face outlining his development agenda in the vote-rich counties.

In the survey by the Electoral Institute for Sustainable Democracy in East African, in Murang’a county, out of the 1,500 respondent’s 50 percent recommended for the Governor, 25 percent for the deputy president and the ODM leader 20 percent, as other possible contenders shared five percent.
In Embu, Ruto polled out of the 1,500 respondents polled 35 percent, Iria 32 percent and Raila 30 percent.
In Nyeri, the backyard of Mathira MP Rigathe Gachagua, Ruto emerged the leader with 36 percent, the Usawa Kwa Wote leader 30 percent and Raila 27 percent.
in Laikipia County, Iria is supported by 42 percent as Raila comes second at 38 percent, while Ruto garner 20 percent as other contenders shared 10 percent from the 1,500 persons interviewed.
In Meru, Raila takes the early lead at 46 percent, followed by Ruto with 31 percent and Iria the third at 20 percent.
In Nakuru, Ruto has 56 percent, Iria 30 percent, and Raila at 21 percent as others share the remaining three percent.
In Tharaka Nithi, Ruto has 52 percent backing, Raila 29 percent and governor Iria 21 percent.
In Kirinyaga, ruto leads at 45 percent, Iria second at 30 percent and Raila third at 20 percent, while in the city, raila takes the leading position at 34 percent, ruto 32 percent and the governor 30 percent.
