Unknown to many Kenya Forest Service Boss Julius Kamau has managed to transform the conservation of the state forests in efforts to increase the forest cover.
Kamau, who was appointed two years ago, has taken conservation of forests a notch higher as he has personally moved around the forests to ensure the public servants and the community are doing as required.
At Gatare and Kinale forests in Aberdare Ranges, Kamau said the government was concerned about an increase of the forest cover in both state forests and private farms to achieve the desired cover accepted internationally.
The Aberdare Forest, he said, was crucial as it the home of the major rivers that fill Ndaka ini dam that supply 75 percent of water to Nairobi.
In the two areas home to Ndaka ini and Sasumua dams that supply water to Nairobi, Kamau backed by senior KFS officers planted thousands of trees encouraging Kenyans to take advantage of the long rains.
“ With the help of Forest Users from the community, the forest department is proud of the continued collaboration in the planting of trees and other conservation duties aimed at rehabilitating the forests after the past degradation,” said Kamau.
Some of the major achievements made in the two years is repossessing the encroached parts of the forests by individuals and rehabilitating them.
