Kenya will observe three days of national mourning following the death of 17 primary school children at Hillside Academy Endarasha in Nyeri County.
President William Ruto said the children who tragically perished were between the ages of 9 and 13, in Grades 4 to 8, too young to have been met the death.
During the national mourning period between September 9, and September 11, the Kenyan flag and that of the East African Community (EAC) will fly at half mast.
The loss, the President said evokes a unique sense of anger, bitterness, sorrow, and emptiness at the cruel twists of fate that extinguished seventeen lives before they had a chance to become the great Kenyan adults they were destined to be.
The incident, he adds, compels accountability in all schools across the country and to take action to safeguard the lives of our school-going children.
“No child should lose their life in a place that is meant to be a safe haven for education, growth, and social development,” said the head of state.
