Murang’a Governor Irungu Kang’ata has pleaded with the locals to allow his administration to construct a Level Five hospital in Makeji area.
The controversy surrounding utilization of land under the control of Delmonte Kenya Limited (DKL) featured prominently during the Mashujaa Day celebrations at Kimorori grounds.
Kang’ata said the land was legally owned by the county government after Delmonte ceded 1,400 acres for the purpose of doing community projects.
“Construction of Kenneth Matiba hospital has kicked off but there have been disruptions occasioned by residents neighboring the land, a trend that must stop,” said the governor.
The leaders supported construction of the health facility, as land rights activist and patron of Kandara Residents Association Kibiru PMG Kamau was arrested by DCI from his Ruaka home in Kiambu and detained at Kirwara police station.
Kang’ata said those demanding to own part of the land need to shelve their interests and allow the construction of the hospital go one.
“ The new facility will help us to shift Kenneth Matiba hospital from a rental building at Kenol town where the county government pays Sh14 million annually in form of rent.
“ The Murang’a Police Commander Mr. David Mathiu should ensure the land is protected from any form of disruption. Other facilities will be established in the land for use by the locals,” said Kang’ata.
On Kenol- Kabati land measuring 34 acres that former Governor Mwangi wa Iria bought at Sh340 million, he said it will be used in establishing an industrial park.
On education, he said next year bursary kitty has been increased from Sh1 million to Sh2 million per ward, with the best five candidates per public primary school getting Sh15,000.
“ These are among the interventions being made to ensure we have more children benefiting from the kitty,” said the governor. Others present were Maragua MP Mary Wamaua and County Commissioner Patrick Mukuria
