The coffee market injects better returns

Seventeen coffee buyers injected Sh455 million after they bought 11,944 bags of the commodity.

In the auction,  the buyers purchased bags of coffee sourced from the cooperative societies and estate farmers reflected more as compared to the earnings of the previous week of Sh374 million.

Gitare and Gichuka factories produce, marketed by Alliance Berries Limited achieved the highest price of Sh 44,376 per bag of AA which Taylor Winch bought.  

NCE CEO Ms Lisper Ndungu said the coffee brokers presented 11,944 bags where 3,225 bags of grade AA  for Sh134 million.

She said in the presentation Alliance Berries delivered 3,864 bags of commodity for Sh150.5 million at the auction followed by Kirinyaga Slopes with 2,029 bags that traded with Sh76 million.

“ As the regulator in the coffee market, we urge the growers to concentrate on the production of quality coffee that will attract the market for the better return,” said Ms Ndung’u.

In the market, the NCE official said, the average cost of a bag of the commodity was Sh30,896  compared to the previous of Sh31,736 of the previous week.

Cooperative Principal Secretary  Patrick Kilemi said he was pleased that the cooperative societies had embraced the auction system with 665 participating in the weekly auction.

Cooperative societies, he said, have supported many of the farmers to market their produce, thus a need for the leadership to embrace good governance structures.

“ As the government, we are working to ensure the cooperatives embrace the governance system, focused the improved transparency and efficiency to protect the farmers’ resources,” said Mr Kilemi.
