Farmers gain at Nairobi Coffee Market

 Nairobi Coffee Exchange (NCE)  has earned the coffee farmers Sh889 million from the sale of 24,124 bags of the commodity trading at an average of Sh31,634 per 50 Kilogrammes bag.

In the second sale this year,  Alliance Berries Limited emerged sold  6,766 bags at  Sh249,903,792($1,566,794.94),  with an average cost of a 50 kilogrammes bag at Sh30,719.70($192.60).

 NKPCU sold 6,352 bags of the commodity earning the farmers Sh 233.2 million( $1,462,499.84).

 Kirinyaga Slopes placed in the third position after earning the farmers Sh212.9 million ( $1,335,29.36) from the sale of 4,340 bags of the commodity.

 In the marketing summary seen by The Standard, the quality grade of AA sold 4,251 bags, AB 9,888 bags, and C 5,825 bags.

 NCE CEO Ms Risper Ndung’u said in the sale 23 buyers bought 24,124 bags of the commodity.

“ The auction had received 24,147 bags of commodity from eight marketing agents out of the licensed 15,” said the CEO.

 The leading buyers in the sale were Ibero  who bought 5,220 bags,  Sasini 3,290, C Dorman 2,976 bags, Louis Dreyfus 2,882 bags and Tayloy Winch 2,921 bags 

 A member of the Coffee Tea Parliamentary Group Joseph Munyoro said the sector was active encouraging farmers to increase production.

 The Kigumo MP said the prices are better than those of last year, calling on the management of the cooperatives and estates to release their coffee through the licensed brokers.

“ Am happy that majority of the coffee societies from Mt Kenya are participating in the auction,” said Munyoro. 

 Kenya Coffee Producers Association Chairman Peter Gikonyo said the sensitisation meetings conducted last year in matters pertaining sale of coffee are yielding fruits.

“ The farmers have been involved in milling and selling of their commodity unlike before,” said Gikonyo.

 Other marketing agents were  KCCE delivered 976 bags,  Kinya coffee 1,451 bags, United Eastern 1,129 bags, and Mt Elgon 1,130 bags.
