Murang’a County Government affirms that ECDE tutors in the four-year contract will receive annual salary increments of between Sh 4,000 and Sh 10,000, depending on their level of education.

The County Secretary, Dr Newton Mwangi insisted that starting this July 2026, the salary increment will be effected once the county budget is approved.

In the proposal, Governor Irungu Kang’ata’s administration will increase to degree holders to Sh 10,000, Diploma holders Sh 6,000, and certificates Sh 4,000, instead of absorbing them on permanent and pensionable terms owing to the financial constraints.

Since Tuesday, the 1,100 tutors went on strike as they rejected the proposal initiated by the county government, preferring  for the permanent and pensionable terms.

Dr Mwangi, Education CEC Faith Njoroge her and Chief Officer Guchu Ndung’u moved to dispel the rumuors peddled, saying Governor Irungu Kang’ata said they will continue engaging the tutors through the laid down channels.

“ Full implementation of the teacher demand will cost over Sh 300 million annually and affect key programs such as the uji Programme, healthcare, and development projects,” he said..

Mwangi said the county government has another 1,700  employees on contract terms, and it will be unwise to only consider the teachers, as the current budget exceeds 35 percent.

“ The recurrent budget stands at 51 percent; it should be brought down to 35 percent to ensure the development kitty is not affected,” he said.
