Coffee exports earned Kenya farmers Sh 2.37 from the direct sales that were dispatched to several destinations internationally.
In the period between October and March in the coffee year 2025/2026 , AFA reports that the farmers in the estates and cooperative societies exported 2, 237,710 million kgs, through the direct sale window.
The report further states that in the six months several counties secured premium prices outside the traditional Nairobi Coffee Exchange (NCE) that generated Sh 23.7 billion after the sale of 33.2 million kgs of the commodity.
The AFA report explained that in the direct sales category, Kirinyaga sold the highest quantity of coffee 1.22 million kgs, for Sh 1.23 billion that accounted for 54 percent of the total volumes.
According to the report, Kirinyaga’s dominance highlights the county’s strong farmer organizations, established buyer relationships, and growing confidence in relationship-based coffee marketing with farmers in Nyeri having sold 89,806 kgs fetching Sh 106.3 million.
“Murang’a emerged the second exporting 396,588 kilograms valued at Sh 425 million that accounted for 18 percent of the total direct sales volumes,” read part of the report.
Henry Kinyua, a coffee value chain expert explained that Kiambu with large estates and cooperative societies, was ranked in the third position after it exported 271,264 kgs valued at Sh 302 million reflecting 12 percent.
He said the cooperative societies with stronger buyer networks, traceability systems, quality consistency, and certification credentials are increasingly commanding premium prices.
“Some counties with relatively smaller volumes recorded exceptionally high prices,” said Mr Kinyua.
Counties that used the direct sales platform were Trans Nzoia sold 13,968 kgs, Migori 29,160kgs, Meru 10,717 kgs, Narok 90,000 kgs, Elgeyo Marakwet 10,859 kgs and others that secured attractive export markets.
The Murang’a based Gatagua Agromarketing Cooperative Society, Chairman Nahason Chege said he has used the direct sale window and benefitted.
“ Over the years, we sell our coffee directly to our partners around the globe, when we are not on the auction platform,” he said.
