Coffee auction nets Sh 13.8 billion in weeks

In 16 weeks between October 1,  last year and February 6, Kenya has managed to auction 300,531 bags of coffee that fetched Sh18.4 billion, as quality coffee the highest return from the market.

In the market 214,855 bags of quality coffee that accounted for 72 percent, the farmers in estates and cooperatives sectors made Sh 13.8 billion.

A report from the Nairobi Coffee Exchange indicated that 90,036 bags of grade AA were auctioned fetching Sh6 billion, controlling 30 percent of the market, as grade AB  traded 124,819 bags that fetched Sh 775.7 million at 42 percent.

“The top five grades  categorised as AA,AB, C, PB, and MH accounted for 92% of all coffee sold in the season 2025/2026.  The premium AB and AA grades accounted for 214,855 bags   of the coffee offered in the market,” read part of the report.

 In the coffee brokers performance, Alliance Berries Limited led marketing 96,801bags of the commodity that were bought at Sh6.17 billion,  New KPCU 42,585 bags for Sh 2.58 billion,  Kirinyaga Slopes 39,272 bags for Sh2.5 billion, CEBBA 14,596 bags  for Sh 853 million among others. 

In the period under review a highest price was at Sh 67, 054 per bag and the lowest at  Sh 12,121 per bag

The report also outlined the brokers who offered the least coffee in the market as Baringo Kawa offered 101 bags for Sh5.9 million, Bungoma 665 bags for Sh 39.4 million, Kiambu Coffee 820 bags for Sh 46.8 million among others.

According to the coffee value chain expert Henry Kinyua, the coffee premium grades at the auction commanded the lion’s share of both volume and value.

“ The trend is  shaping  the coffee quality-driven marketing year, and farmers are working on the improvement of the quality,” said Kinyua.
