The small holder tea factories earned Sh 1.11 billion after the auction of 3,170,088 kgs of tea at the Mombasa Tea Auction.
In the weekly sale factories, 10 factories that fetched the lucrative price of between Sh 433 and Sh 406 per kgs of tea, were Gathuthi Sh 15.2million after the auction of 35,200kgs ,Imenti Sh 13.2 million (31,120kgs) ,Rukuriri Sh 25.3 million (60,280kgs) , Githongo Sh 14 million (33,780kgs), Kathangariri Sh 7.2 million (17,476.00kgs) , Kiegoi Sh 26.4 million (63,656kgs), Gachagare Sh 16.9 million (41,152kgs).
Other factories were Ngere Sh 52.9 million (128,714kgs), Mungania Sh 22.2 million (54,496kgs), and Kambaa Sh 21.5 million (52,914kgs).
In the ranking Ngere tea factory offered the highest volume of 128,714kgs.
Other factories in Murang’a that participated in the auction were Njunu that offered 44,360kgs and Ikumbi 21,760 kgs and Gatunguru 42,072kgs.
In the east of the rift, Michimikuru factory offered 93,208 kgs and fetched the least price of Sh 331 per kgs, as Momul factory took the lead in the west of the rift presented 67,216 kgs earning Sh 22.4 million.
KTDA Zone six Board Member Enos Njeru says farmers across the country are concentrated in the production of quality tea, to attract more buyers.
He added that Rukuriri, Mungania and Kathangariri in Embu county in the auction received the premium price, owing to the presentation of the best tea in the market.
“ The buyers are interested in the small holder tea factories owing to the production of the quality tea as recommended by the agriculture extension officers,” said Mr Njeru.
Ngere tea factory chairman James Githinji says factories in the KTDA zone two in the sales are listed to have offered the highest volume.
“ We have agriculture extension officers who visit farmers in their areas advising them to ensure we achieve the highest quality,” said Mr Githinji.
