Coffee market nets Sh1.5 billion 

The coffee auction resumed after the December break netting  Sh 1.5 billion after the sale of 24,890 bags of coffee sourced  from the estates and cooperative societies. 

 At the closure of the auction on December 16, the Nairobi Coffee Exchange (NCE) had auctioned a total of 150,008 bags  for the period between October and December that netted Sh 9.3 billion.

In the weekly auction, the coffee brokers delivered 7,929  bags of grade AA, 10,789 bags of grade AB and 2,290 bags of grade C that fetched a total of  Sh 1.3 billion. 

The NCE report outlined that Gatitu factory achieved the highest price of  Sh  62,954 for each of the 10 bags of grade AA, followed by Gikirima Sh 60, 864, Gicherori Sh  60,735 all marketed by the Alliance Berries Limited. 

NCE CEO Lisper Ndung’u reported that Alliance Berries Limited led the pack marketing 9,803 bags that netted  Sh 617.6 million , Kirinyaga Slopes 3,252 bags ( Sh 204 million). 

The others were New KPCU 2,924 bags ( Sh178.4 million), CEBBA 1,732 bags ( Sh 105.6 million).

“Alliance Berries Limited marketed the highest volumes of quality coffee 3,419 bags of grade AA and 4,250 bags of grade AB, followed by Kirinyaga Slopes 1,286 bags of AA and 1,169 bags of AB, New KPCU 861 bags of AA and 1,301 bags of AB,” said the CEO.

Kangema MP Peter Kihungi calls on the coffee farmers to utilise the conducive market prices at the auction.

“I am pleading with the farmers in the estates and cooperatives to take their coffee to the market and enjoy the impressive prices,” said Kihungi.

In the buyers category, 18 buyers participated with the Ibero Kenya bought 6,980 bags, Taylor Winch 4,776 bags, C.Dormans 4,637 bags, Sasini 2,590 bags, Kenyacof 2,276 bags among others. 

The report details that a bag of coffee was bought at an average price of Sh 43,310.

 Marumi factory in Kigumo sold 56 bags of grade AA that fetched Sh 3.2 million, Wahundura factory 65 bags for Sh 3.7 million and Ruthagati factory 21 bags  for Sh 1.2 million.
