Tea market earns factories Sh 1.2 billion

Tea factories under the KTDA management earned  Sh 1,224,991,440 after the auction of 4,803,888 kgs.

The weekly payment posted the highest returns in the last three months.

 The leading factories in achieving the premier prices were Mununga Sh 38.7 million after the sale of 115,184kgs , Imenti Sh 21.2 million (64,268kgs), Gathuthi Sh  28.3 million (89,292 kgs) , Rukuriri Sh  41.8 million ( 134,199kgs) Kimunye Sh 36.1 million ( 116,168kgs), Gacharage Sh 20.4 million (66,072) , Kiegoi Sh 17.2  million ( 55,670kgs)..

Others are Githongo Sh 15.7 million (50,676kgs) , Ndima Sh 31.2 million ( 102,600kgs) and Kathangariri Sh 27.5 million ( 91,084kgs). 

The trading was conducted on November 10 and November 11 that stated that the first 10 factories fetched prices of between Sh 336 and Sh 303 per kg sold at the auction..

Report by the Tea Brokers East Africa Limited (TBEAL) indicated the number of factories that offered large volumes at that market were led by Ngere  with 196,455kgs, Rukuriri 134,199kgs,Makomboki 101,264kgs , Mungania 105,182 kgs  among others.

“ Momul factory continued to perform better in the west of the rift as it posted a sale of 96,742kgs that fetched Sh 23.5 million. 

 KTDA Board Member Enos Njeru representing  Embu County said increased green leaf production of green leaf followed improved rains  in the country.

“ More importantly the farmers are on notice they must produce quality tea  to attract the markets,” said Njeru.

In the auction performance, 9.4 kgs of tea  sourced  from Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda and Burundi traded with the highest volume sourced  from Kenya weighing 7,984,194 kgs.

 Uganda presented 929,719kgs, Rwanda 365,056 kgs, and Burundi 155, 861kgs.

In the market, there were 47 tea buyers led by Global tea 24,440 packages, KTDA owned Chai Trading 13,700 packages, LAB International 11,280 packages among others dealers.
