A children’s rights defender has pleaded with the devolved systems of government to check the welfare of all children, to ensure they are safe from hunger and molestation.
Dr Beth Nduta Githaiga said the county governments are duty bound to ensure there are effective feeding programmes in the ECDE centres as it has been demonstrated in Murang’a county.
Githaiga speaking at Riandegwa primary school in Kagundu ini ward in Murang’a, to celebrate the International Day of the African Child, said Governor Irungu Kang’ata has initiated feeding programs in both ECDs and comprehensive centres.
Githaiga observed that feeding programmes not only boost education in these children, but also provide one of the pillars of the basic need.
The parents, she said, are also expected to ensure the youth dress decently and provide them with shelter.
“ It is heartening that the youth girls are defiled by relatives, strangers amongst others, a trend that should be curbed through ensuring the culprits face the full wrath of the law,” said Githaiga.
In Kagundu ini ward, she underscored that there were children exposed to psychological and mental torture due to marital conflicts in their respective homes.
“ When couples disagree, the victims are the children who expose the young girls to molestations,” said the children’s rights defender.
