A section of residents in Gachagi village in Maragua constituency are seeking for state intervention to end a controversy on land ownership with Kakuzi PLC limited.
The squatters in Makuyu recounts that an agreement entered between them and Kakuzi they all settled, which was not honoured.
The recounted that out of the 25 families only 10 were settled, asserts the community leader Michael Mburi.
The residents said they live in deplorable conditions, with leaking roofs, that are uncomfortable to the elderly, with claims the company infringes on their privacy through drones.
“They spy on our movement based on the fact that we have been looking for all avenues to get our rights,” said Mburi.
In a document from the company, the 10 were settled on 10 acres of land.
Maragua MP Mary Wamaua plans for a meeting with the residents to explain the outcome of the engagements that have been taking place on their plight.
“ Am aware of the previous meetings between the company and the squatters the matter will be revisited to unearth what transpired that the squatters were never settled even after the parties reached an agreement.” said the MP.
Kakuzi company head of corporate affairs Simon Odhiambo, confirms uses for drones which are operated by licensed security teams within the confines of our orchards and farm areas, purely for the security risks.
“A section of residents have challenged the MoU entered before the National Land Commission (NLC) and the Courts, which were awaiting the determination,” says Mr Odhiambo
