Coffee sector injects Sh1.1 billionĀ  at NCE

Seventeen coffee buyers bought  21,636 bags of coffee at the Nairobi Coffee Exchange (NCE) for Sh1,130,200,406 reflecting a rise compared to the previous sale.

In  the previous auction, the farmers netted Sh1,039,132,300 following the sale of 19,017 bags of coffee.

The NCE reports reflect that cooperatives and estates allied to Alliance Berries Limited , New KPCU and Kirinyaga Slopes achieved the highest prices at the auction for Grades AA and AB.

NCE CEO Lisper Ndung’u report indicated thatGicherori fa ctory in Embu achieved the highest price of Sh 55, 060 brokered by Alliance Berries Limited.

Kahindu and Kiganjo coffee factories grade AA of coffee also brokered by Alliance Berries Limited achieved the highest price of Sh54,935.50 per bag.

 Other factories that achieved the highest prices  for Grade AA are Marumi Sh 54,030, Kiamambara Sh53,772 in Kigumo and Mathira respectively.

Kiandieri factory achieved Sh 53,125  and Nakoyonjo Sh 51,962  for their Grade AA brokered by Kirinyaga slopes and New KPCU  respectively.

At the auction the 11 brokers presented 15,372 bags of Grade AA and AB that were in demand by the local and international buyers. 

The report further detailed that Alliance Berries presented 5,122 bags of grade AA and AB followed Kirinyaga Slopes with 2,913 bags of the premier grades.

 Ms Ndung’u said it was encouraging that the coffee brokers in the weekly auction presented more bags of coffee than the previous week.

In an interview with The Standard, she said, the highest prices achieved in the coffee auction were last witnessed 15 years ago, thus the farmers need to take advantage of the situation.

ā€œ The stakeholders in coffee have been reaching out to farmers seeking  for the presentation of the produce at the market. We hope in the coming weeks  there will be high volumes in the market,ā€ she said.

 Kigumo MP Joseph Munyoro calls on the coffee societies leadership to ensure the coffee in the stores was taken  to the market.

ā€œ The prices at the auction have been improving and the leadership is duty bound  to ensure all the produce is handed over to the brokers as the procedure demands,ā€ said Munyoro, also a member of the coffee and tea parliamentary group.

Ā In the auction Alliance Berries presented 7,107 bags that fetched Sh 386,697,026. Kirinyaga Slopes 3,879 bags for Sh215,621,498, New KPCU 2,015 bagsĀ  for Sh103,250,721.

others are Kipkelion 2,578 bags (Sh124.8 million), CEBBL174 bags (Sh 8.2 million), among others.

Ā Ā In the dealers category, Ibero Kenya bought 8,725 bags for Sh432,523,723, C Dorman 3,880 bags (Sh230,391,591), Taylor Winch 2,615 bagsĀ  (Sh139,954,775), KenyacofĀ  2,321 bagsĀ  (Sh 126,402,043),Sasini 1,979 bags( Sh104,010,586) Mt Elgon 538 bags (Sh26.7 million).

Bekas systems and Kyandu Trading Company bought the least bags of coffee at the NCE of 23 and six respectively.
