Mombasa tea market earns Sh1.4 billion in the weekly sale

Seventy tea factories last week fetched Sh1,416,148,117 after the auction of 4,198,294 kgs of tea.

 The returns in the market were less compared to the previous Sh1,484,838,599 for the auction of 4.23 million kgs.

Mununga tea factory took the lead with Sh39.6 million after the auction of 88,394 kgs followed by Ngere Tea Factory  with Sh37.8 million 90,608 kgs. 

Njunu Tea Factory sold 67,786 kgs  for Sh26.7 million for 67,786 kgs. 

In the previous week, Ngere was ranked the best at the auction after it sold 104,508 kgs for Sh44.3 million.

In the previous week, the factories earned Sh1,484,838,599 after the auction of 4.23 million kgs.

 The report indicates that in the week 8,725,633 kgs of teas  from Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Rwanda, and Burundi were sold.

KTDA factories sold 4.1million kgs, in the auction where there were 53 local and international buyers.

Global Tea led the pack with the purchase of  21,420 kgs , LAB International 14.520 Kgs, Mitchell Cotts 13,680, Chai Trading 8,659 kgs.

 The KTDA Holding Chairman Enos Njeru said  the smallholder factories in Kenya produced 4.1 million kgs, praising the factories  for the production of quality tea.

Njeru said there is still competition in the production of the quality tea in the market.

“ The competition on quality production follows the directive by the government to ensure adherence to teas by the smallholder factories and the independent factories,” said Njeru.

 Njunu factory chairman John Matheri and the vice chairman Mr Peterson Maina Gathua said the farmers have put in efforts to produce quality teas.

“ In the latest sale Njunu was ranked the fifth best owing to the growers following the rules and regulations that impose plucking of the quality green leaf at the farm level,” said Maina.
