Coffee auction fetch Sh376 million for farmers

 Fifteen coffee buyers bought 9,618 bags of coffee at Sh374.6 million at the Nairobi Coffee Exchange (NCE).

In the weekly auction market, Ndundu Factory in Kiambu achieved the highest price of Sh48,375  for each of the 35 bags of quality coffee sold by Alliance Berries Limited.

Kiganjo factory allied also to the Alliance Berries Limited achieved the second-best price of Sh 45,408 per bag of its AA grade,  followed by Ntongoro factory at Sh43,989 per bag.

NCE Chief Executive Officer Lisper Ndung’u said the weekly market for the coffee brokers presented 2,841 bags of AA grades that fetched  Sh118.6 million,  and another 4,167 bags of AB  for Sh165.2 million.

 Meru Coffee, she said in the auction platform, sold 900 bags of grade AA that fetched Sh37.3 million, while Alliance Berries managed 863 bags that were auctioned for Sh37.4 million.

“In total, there was 590,302 kilogramme of coffee that was delivered in the weekly auction, and we continue pleading with the farmers in the cooperatives and estates to produce quality grades that attract the local and the international buyers,” said Ms. Ndung’u.

 In the brokers’ performance, the report detailed that Alliance Berries Limited delivered 3,237 bags that were bought for Sh126 million. 

The state-backed New KPCU presented  2,278 bags that fetched  Sh87.4 million.

 Cooperative Principal Secretary Patrick Kilemie said that Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua the leader of the coffee reforms in a meeting at his office on Monday directed all involved in coffee regulating to support NCE in the reforms. 

“ The DP is keen to support the coffee cooperatives to increase efficiency thus need for the stakeholders to ensure quality production was achieved hence better prices,’ said the PS.

In the dealers category, the report by the NCE reports indicates that C-Dorman led the pack buying 2,195 bags at Sh90.5 million,  followed by Ibero Kenya at 1,953 bags for Sh74.2 million.

Others that bought the coffee at the market are Taylor Winch 1,830 bags for Sh73.3 million, Louis Dreyfus 1,196 bags for Sh43.6 million, and Kenyacof 703 bags for Sh25.8 million.
