There is a need for the government to rescind its decision to construct affordable houses on public land.
Kiharu based politician Karanja Mburu Wamatangi said there was a need to initiate the housing programme on people’s land, as the government lower the taxation on the building materials as a way to provide shelter to thousands annually.
He spoke at Thenge ini village in Muchungucha location in Kiharu, when Karanja Mburu foundation commenced construction of a permanent house to the family of Obadiah Kariuki.
“ It is painful that in the coming years land for stadiums, universities, hospitals will not be available, after they have been occupied by the housing programme.. There is a need for the land to be used for the intended purpose for the interest of the community in the future,” said Karanja.
He adds that the cost of building materials was too high, asking the government to reduce the taxes to enable the local citizens to build decent houses for their families.
“ Many Kenyans are disappointed with the high cost of living that the Kenya Kwanza government should address without further delay.
Kariuki said he was disillusioned after attempts to build a brick house scrambled.
He said he was earning Sh7,000 per month and he spends Sh4,000 to facilitate education of his four children and two grandchildren.
“ I have tried to build a brick house but twice after spending resources the structure scrambled,” said Kariuki.
A community leader Sabina Gakobo said the cost of building was too high forcing many of the families to live in dilapidated shelters.
Many of the families, she said, were living in problems due to the high cost of cement, timber among other materials. After their prices have skyrocketed.
“ Many of the people in the villages are turning to the use of traditional bricks for building, as Sh250 paid to the casual worker daily is not enough to feed, shelter and educate their children,” said Gakobo.
