A Murang’a-based foundation will educate 110 students in a four-year scholarship programme at Sh10 million.

Irungu Nyakera Foundation initiated by Kemsa Chairman Mr Irungu Nyakera came to the rescue of students who had been left at home, as others joined secondary schools through other bursary programmes.

Speaking at Kimorori primary school grounds, when he distributed bursary cheques, Nyakera said he would continue supporting the children from the poor backyard to pursue their dreams in education.

Nyakera said the initiative supported by friends,  will this year pay fees for day scholars.

“ Last year we had 354 students who had been educated through the programme and they did well in their KCSE,” said Nyakera as he appealed to the wellwishers to support the initiatives to educate more children.

He said this year the foundation has offered support to day school learners in a four-year scholarship programme.

During the function, Maragua MP Mary Wamaua lauded Nyakera for allocating resources annually for the venerable children’s access to education, saying the initiative saves them from being left in the villages, owing to their parents’ financial inability.

She said the amount disbursed for the NG CDF bursary kitty was not enough to cater to the needs of all the deserving children.

“In Maragua disbursed  Sh46 million which was not enough as it catered for only 60 percent of the needs, am happy that the foundation stepped in to help others,” she said.

Wamaua said there was need for a legislation to merge the bursaries from the NG CDF and county governments among others in the interest of supporting the children fully.

“ Presently the MPs and Governors have their kitties as each was out to support their people with bursary cheques,” said the MP.
