Another 18, 000 vulnerable households will benefit from the Murang’a County Government health care programme.

The enhanced health scheme dubbed Kang’ata Care, an initiative between NHIF/ and the county government will have facilitated medical care to 38,865 households at Sh240 million annually.

Governor Irungu Kang’ata said the programme will help 120, 000 individuals in the selected households to access quality treatment in public and private health facilities.

Kang’ata signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the NHIF to benefit an additional 18,000 households awaiting to be activated in January 2024.

“In the last financial year, the county government allocated Sh164 million to support the programme, where vulnerable households accessed free medical care from both public and private hospitals,” said Kang’ata.

The Governor underscored the programme saying beneficiaries have been accessing more medical services as compared to ordinary NHIF cover.

“Last year, the project covered 20,700 households. This year, registered members have been increased to 38,865 households due to the popularity of the programme. More than 120,000 residents will benefit,” said the Governor.

NHIF Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Elijah Wachira said the medical scheme is geared towards rolling out Universal Health Coverage (UHC) in alignment with the Bottom -Up Economic Transformation Agenda.

“Murang’a was the first devolved unit to launch a unique cover which aims at providing comprehensive healthcare services to the poor and vulnerable persons,” said Mr Wachira.

Wachira called upon other county governments to learn from Murang’a and have a similar cover for the less fortunate in the society.
