More than 745 nurses and midwives in 21 counties are undergoing
training facilitated by an NGO on the reduction of maternal deaths.
The training conducted by Jacaranda Health has seen reduced
deaths of mothers and their newborns during deliveries in the hospitals and
homes.
Jacaranda Health Deputy Country Director Dr Job Makoyo
said the counties training has injected new innovations on the health workers
on how best to handle mothers in the maternity wards and their newborns.
In Mt Kenya region, counties in the programme are Nyeri,
Kirinyaga, Murang’a, Kiambu among others.
Makoyo spoke at Golden Hotel Kenol, during the graduation
of 68 health workers from Murang’a county after they completed their six months
training facilitated by the organization.

The maternal deaths, he said, have been alarming in the country
are 357 out of the 1,000 deliveries, but the situation has improved following
intensive training of the health workers in the country.
“We have mentors at the counties who train the health workers to
ensure they serve the mothers with dignity and encourage more to seek for
services,” said Makoyo.

Murang’a County Health CEC Dr Fredrick Mbugua said 90 percent of
maternal deaths are preventable and thus need to train the health workers.
Training of the 68 from 18 facilities in the county,
Mbugua said is a milestone as they have been introduced in innovative
ways.
“ The training has assisted in the reduced maternal deaths as
last year we had 14 in Murang’a county as compared to 19 in 2017,” said Mbugua.
He added that there were two years that the county
registered zero maternal deaths.
Ministry of health official Mohammed Habulle of the
Reproductive Health Department said there was need for the trained health
workers to mentor the other staff in the facilities.
Mohammed said many of the deaths are caused by the delay
to be attended at the facilities.
“There are instances of the mothers dying after they are blocked
from entering the facilities by the watchmen at the gates. It’s high time the
watchmen are educated on the concept and stop acting foolishly on some
instructions given by the in-charge,” said Mohammed.
