Fight against illicit brews and contrabands can only be won if the senior security agents will lead by example through providing effective instructions.
Yesterday, Murang’a county police commander David Mathiu instructed all security officers to lead by example especially during the ongoing war against illicit brews, contrabands and drugs.
In a meeting at the Murang’a police canteen, Mathiu observed that it would be ridiculous if the officers in the raid would be drunk yet they are expected to eradicate the illicit brews and bhang.
The senior officers, he warned, should ensure their juniors are not indulged in alcoholism when on duty and to avoid being compromised by rogues supplying the illicit brews and peddling bhang.

“ It is embarrassing we have drunk police men in the morning yet they are expected to spearhead war against this menace. This must stop and ensure we are effective in the service delivery,” said Mathiu.
In the past two weeks, it has been observed there have been achievements in the raids against illicit and counterfeit alcoholism after the police intercepted over 2 500 fake alcoholic drinks.
“We also managed to destroy over 2, 000 litres of chang’aa among other types of illicit brews being manufactured along river banks of Chania river,” said the county police commander.
In the operations, 83 people were arrested and prosecuted while 1, 080 rolls of bhang were intercepted.
He stressed on team work between the officers in the different ranks calling on the seniors to stop ignoring their juniors if they are determined to win the war against the crime.
“Cooperation will enable us to win this war. OCS and their deputies should avoid ignoring their juniors. Team work will ensure we eliminate the problem in this county,” he added.
Last week, members of the public in Wangu ward in Koimbi villages in secret ballots named people they believe to be behind contrabands, manufacturing of illicit liquor and selling of bhang.
The names were forwarded to Mathiu by Ahadi Kenya Executive Director Dr Stanley Kamau after he convened a meeting with leaders in exploring ways to tame alcoholism.
Kamau backed by MCAs Margaret Gichia aka Mama Kang’ata of Wangu ward and Grace Nduta aka City of Kanyenya ini ward said he will not sit and watch the young generation destroyed by merchants of darkness.
” It is the responsibility of all leaders at any level to support the war against alcoholism and drug abuse,” said Kamau.
