Kenyans have been warned against self-medication instead they should get treatment in health facilities.
The call by health workers came following tens of people diagnosed with diseases after laboratory tests.
Dr Willy Kanyagia said it was disturbing that thousands of people flock into chemists buying drugs for self medication.
The sentiments were expressed at Gacharage ini Catholic Church during a medical camp organized by Raphael Kiome Foundation that saw more than 800 people, majority elderly turned for treatment.
“Self medication is a major threat where chemists attendants prescribe drugs to patients, In Kandara we found that there are people who are being given wrong diagnosis yet after tests we found they were suffering from diabetes and other diseases,” said Kanyagia.
The residents who turned up for treatment led by Mercy Wanjiru and Daniel Njuguna regretted that the majority of the health facilities lacked drugs forcing many to retreat from chemists.
Wanjiru said self medication syndrome has been rife as public health facilities lack drugs.
“Murang’a County Government should ensure there are drugs in all facilities to save the poor from being exploited by the chemist operators,” said Wanjiru.
Kiome who is aspiring for Kandara Parliamentary seat said the residents are pushing for completion of Bildad Kaggia Level Four hospital to easen their problems.
“ Kandara is faced with many problems that include roads, and the stalled Bildad Kaggia hospital that the locals want them completed ,” said Kiome.
